GORD conducted a Workshop on GULF GREEN MARK – Product labeling

On April 16, 2016, GORD conducted a workshop titled “GULF GREEN MARK” for Product labeling workshop at Qatar National Convention Centre. 

The first of its kind in GCC and MENA region “GULF GREEN MARK”, Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) System, is dedicated to promote products and materials for the construction industry with the declared environmental footprints over their life cycle.

The workshop aimed at providing participants with a technical background about product labeling and life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The life cycle assessment is a scientific measurement that also enables the evaluation of the environmental burdens associated with a product throughout its service life.

The notable topics of the workshop included sessions covering the GSAS and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) criteria, underlining the impact categories and the Life Cycle analysis of building Materials and Building Elements. This was followed by an overview of the new system, the Gulf Green Mark.

Leading manufactures in Qatar such as SMEET & AlWaab Plastics interested in products certification, had the opportunity to speak during the Gulf Green Mark – Product Labeling workshop, placing emphasis on their commitment to using sustainable products.

SMEET, a leading producer of building materials in the MENA Region with the largest and most advanced single factory offers innovative building solutions for the construction industry.  The team highlighted the company’s commitment to upholding high standards in their Environmental management system.

In line with this, SMEET are in the process of achieving Gulf Green Mark certification for all their products under the guidance of GORD. Mohamad Kassim, Technical Manager, SMEET commented: “We are proud that we are the first concrete specialist company in Qatar to apply for this certification furthermore we are delighted to contribute towards the nation’s effort to further reduce the carbon foot print”.

Al Waab Trading & Contracting Establishment representative Eslam Abdelfattah, highlighted the company efforts in contributing to a sustainable development process that seeks to meet the needs of present generation without compromising the ability of future generation. Showcasing that the Gulf Green Mark system is thoughtfully designed to ensure that products and materials are more sustainable and reliable, supporting the efforts to achieve the objectives set out in Qatar’s National Vision 2030.  The presentation also shared innovative technologies providing solutions to challenges of a complex and evolving market and discussed the use of CPVC in Doha and its energy requirements.
 
GORD welcomed the manufacturers that applied for the Gulf Green Mark – GCC Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) System, highlighting the future projects in Qatar and the region, he commented: “Gulf Green Mark – Product Labeling will serve as an important marketing vehicle to manufactures and suppliers, and will inform developers and the local market about the environmental performance of these products based on LCA in accordance with international standards and the program instructions.”
 
GORD invited all manufacturers of products & materials to apply for the Gulf Green Mark (GGM), urging participants to contribute to the growing sustainability community in the region in order to receive a competitive edge in the market.
