GORD presents CCUS research at International Gas Conference

The Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD) recently participated in the 6th International Gas Conference, organized by Qatar University from December 2-4, 2024. The event, which attracted experts from around the world, focused on the theme of “Natural Gas in Energy Transition & Sustainability" underscoring Qatar's pivotal role in global energy markets, particularly in natural gas.

With Qatar's vast natural gas reserves, the event offered a platform for addressing critical global energy challenges, including the transition to cleaner energy sources and the role of natural gas in achieving sustainability goals.

A significant highlight of the event was a series of presentations by academic and industry leaders, including those from GORD’s RDI wing. Researchers from the GORD Institute presented their work on Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technologies, which are essential to mitigating the environmental impact of the energy sector. Their presentation focused on the development of sustainable construction materials using produced water and captured CO2. This research explores innovative ways to reduce the carbon footprint of construction while utilizing by-products from the oil and gas industry in a productive manner.

The conference also featured discussions on the future of natural gas as a bridge fuel in the energy transition, as well as strategies for enhancing the sustainability of the energy sector. Experts from academia and industry shared insights on new technologies and practices, while also examining the broader role of natural gas in the global energy mix amid the growing demand for cleaner and more efficient energy solutions.
