Reinforcing its position among the leading organizations in the global sustainability milieu, the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD) is participating in the Cairo Sustainable Energy Week (CSEW) 2024 as a Sustainability Partner of the event. Commenced on October 1 in Cairo, Egypt, the second edition of CSEW is organized by the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE). The event is taking place under the patronage of HE Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, and Dr. Mahmoud Ismat, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy.

During the event, GORD is showcasing its green initiatives through presentations and exhibitions focused on promoting sustainable practices and climate action across various sectors. This includes initiatives supporting carbon offsetting, implementation of the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) for sustainable built environment, organizing capacity building programs, and supporting research and development projects to find innovative and sustainable solutions to climate challenges facing the world.

Speaking about GORD’s participation, Founding Chairman, Dr. Yousef Alhorr said, “At GORD, we recognize that the energy transition is indispensable for the MENA region, not only to enhance energy security but also to combat climate change and foster economic growth. By participating in Cairo Sustainable Energy Week 2024, we hope to collaborate with global partners, aiming to drive sustainable practices that will lead to a resilient and low-carbon future for our region.”

At its booth, GORD showcased sustainability solutions and innovations related to energy performance assessment for all types of buildings. This included Energia Suite, which has been developed as a cost-effective alternative to complex energy simulation tools.

Additionally, GORD presented its Climate Action Center of Excellence (CACE), which aims to accelerate the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. CACE offers high-impact solutions to support governments and the private sector in accelerating the implementation of the Paris Agreement and achieving the essential goal of decarbonization by mid-century. It provides countries with technical assistance to enter carbon markets, and facilitates the reduction and removal of emissions by mobilizing climate finance, providing value for money for investors, and generating new projects.

GORD’s affiliate entity Global Carbon Council (GCC) was also highlighted at CSEW. In the Global South, GCC is the only international program fully accredited by ICAO’s CORSIA. GCC is also accredited by ICROA. The initiative contributes to building a sustainable, low-carbon future by issuing carbon credits for projects worldwide that promote GHG mitigation and sustainable development.

The Cairo Sustainable Energy Week will feature over 30 panel discussions, with 150 speakers including decision-makers, policymakers, energy planners, resource managers, network operators, industry leaders, investors, and experts. A key highlight of the event is the Sustainable Energy Conference 2024, providing a platform for discussions on critical topics such as robust energy systems, resource management, and renewable energy adoption in the MENA region.

On the first day, GORD participated in a conference session that addressed the implications of the carbon trade market and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), focusing on its economic impacts and compliance strategies. The second day included a dedicated session for the Global Carbon Council, discussing key operations and the critical Article 6 related decisions leading up to COP29, highlighting its role in accelerating the clean energy transition. Additionally, GCC participated in a session on green finance, exploring how strategies, policies, and regulations can foster private sector investment in sustainable energy projects in the MENA region. CACE's presence was also notable, with a senior representative participating in a session on the role of private sector banks and financial institutions in financing the energy transition and climate action.

CSEW provided an important opportunity to discuss key challenges related to the energy transition in the region, covering vital topics such as electricity generation from renewable and clean sources, electrical interconnection, and green hydrogen, as well as facilitating access to green financing to achieve sustainable development goals. GORD’s participation in this regional event aims to explore collaboration opportunities in various fields globally to enhance the transition toward sustainability. At the same time, it highlights GORD's innovations and solutions in energy efficiency and climate change mitigation.
