CNN Feature: The Pearl's green initiatives

In a recent CNN feature story, Dr. Yousef Alhorr, Founding Chairman of the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD), praised The Pearl for its eco-friendly features, which includes GSAS-compliant energy-efficient building operations and a centralized cooling plant that utilizes treated sewage effluent. The development’s sustainable features, such as its recycling plant, electric vehicle infrastructure, and community awareness programs, are part of a larger commitment to creating a livable, green community on reclaimed land.

The master developer of The Pearl, the United Development Company (UDC) has implemented several sustainability initiatives within the Island. These measures include collaborative efforts with GORD to enhance the environmental performance of buildings and facilities within The Pearl.

In 2022, UDC Tower received the GSAS Operations Certificate, marking it as the first project on The Pearl Island to achieve this certification. Later in 2023, UDC and GORD formalized a strategic collaboration to advance sustainability and GSAS implementation on UDC projects, including facilities within The Pearl and Gewan Islands. The most recent outcome of this collaboration is UDC’s achievement of the GSAS 3-Star Design and Build Certification for Crystal Residence, a mixed-use development on Gewan Island.
