GORD Academy hosts First GSAS Operations Workshop of 2026 in Doha
GORD Academy, the training and capacity-building arm of the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD), successfully hosted its first GSAS Operations workshop of 2026 at GORD headquarters located in Qatar Science and Technology Park. The specialized training program aimed to build practical knowledge around GSAS Operations certification, which targets the environmental performance of existing buildings and emphasizes occupant health, well-being, and satisfaction. Sessions highlighted how the real sustainability footprint of buildings is driven not only by design and construction, but largely by day-to-day operational practices, making performance-based operations a critical lever for climate action.
Participants received in-depth guidance on how GSAS Operations supports reduced resource consumption and improved facility performance through structured assessment and continuous improvement. Professionals who successfully complete the training become GSAS Operations Certified Green Professionals (CGP) – a prestigious professional credential that authorizes them to support and lead the implementation of GSAS Operations requirements across building and infrastructure projects.
The workshop also placed GSAS Operations within the broader global climate context. With buildings responsible for roughly 39% of global carbon emissions – most of which come from operational activities – sustainable building operations are increasingly recognized as essential to climate mitigation and human well-being. Momentum from global climate platforms such as COP conferences and net-zero city commitments has further accelerated demand for robust operational sustainability standards.
Aligned with national climate targets, GSAS Operations supports Qatar’s pathway toward lower greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient urban development. The GSAS framework follows a lifecycle approach and aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, offering a structured pathway for both new and existing buildings to enhance sustainability performance through audits, benchmarking, and verified certification.
Over the years, GSAS Operations certification has been adopted by several landmark facilities across the country, including FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums, Doha Metro Stations, PHCC healthcare centers, key museums, as well as other iconic projects across Qatar and the wider region, demonstrating the growing market uptake of performance-based sustainability standards in building operations.
