This project aims to design, model and construct a solar pond for desalination, cooling and power generation purposes. The pond inlet and outlet will be carefully designed with distributor pipes to minimize local flow velocity which could induce mixing and de-stratification, leading to loss of performance. In salt gradient mode, the pond will supply hot bitterns at up to 90°C. In homogeneous mode, the pond will act as both solar collector and evaporator providing a simpler but less efficient regenerator, similar to a traditional solar salt works.

Based on the above GORD constructed the solar pond and the testing facility at Qatar Science and Technology Park. Different types of solar systems are also installed including thermal stores.
