This project aims to capture and utilize CO2 and produce cement using sea water brine. The process consists of the reaction of a CO2 rich gas stream with desalination brine, rich in Mg2+ ions, to form MgCO33H2O, Nesquehonite, in alkaline media. After drying of the solid, the molecule of Nesquehonite is dehydrated to form the main product, which consists of a dehydrated magnesium carbonate cement with cementitious properties upon rehydration. The CO2 rich stream is assumed to come from the combustion of diesel in an electricity generator and the brine is the by-product of a MSF (multi-stage distillation) desalination plant. The process would need of sodium hydroxide to maintain an alkaline media.

Initially the production of Magnesium Carbonate Trihydrate, Nesquehonite (NQ), was carried out at laboratory scale using pure compounds as reactants. The pure NQ from the laboratory experiment also allowed testing to be carried out on the drying and activation steps to achieve a better understanding of the most ideal final product required.

A pilot plant will be installed at GORD facility in QSTP to carry on their research on the feasibility of CO2 utilisation for a larger scale production. Everything learned at laboratory scale production can be applied to aid the construction of the plant and the carbon capture process.
