AIPH delegation visits GORD to discuss Expo 2023’s sustainability progress

In a significant step towards promoting sustainability at Expo 2023, a delegation from the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) recently visited the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD) headquarter in Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP). The purpose of the meeting was to receive updates on the sustainability initiatives undertaken for the upcoming Expo. As the sustainability partner of Expo 2023, GORD delivered informative presentations, highlighting the progress made thus far.
During the meeting, senior management from GORD provided a comprehensive overview of the developments and advancements achieved in the Expo's sustainability objectives. One of the central topics of discussion was the introduction of the GSAS EcoLeaf certification, which plays a vital role in ensuring sustainability throughout the planning, design, construction, operations, and dismantlement phases of the Expo.
Speaking about GORD’s role in the upcoming expo, Dr. Yousef Alhorr, Founding Chairman of GORD, said, “With our extensive sustainability expertise and experience from past events including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, GORD is poised to make a positive contribution to Expo 2023's sustainability journey. Qatar's existing infrastructure provides a solid foundation to support the event's sustainability goals. We are excited to leverage our knowledge and capabilities to ensure that Expo 2023 becomes a benchmark for sustainable practices within the global expo community.”
Expressing his appreciation for the efforts made to ensure sustainability at the Expo, Mr. Tim Briercliffe, Secretary General of AIPH, said, “We are truly impressed by Qatar’s remarkable progress made so far in ensuring the sustainability of Expo 2023. The expo's plans we’ve seen today are not only meeting but exceeding AIPH requirements, setting a new benchmark for expos worldwide.” He further emphasized the significance of the EcoLeaf certification, which provides a clear assessment and improvement plan to minimize the carbon footprint of events. “The introduction of the EcoLeaf certification is a significant step which we believe will serve as a powerful tool and a lasting legacy, not only for future events in Qatar but for expos across the globe,” he added.
The AIPH delegation's visit to GORD signifies the importance of sustainability in the Expo 2023 and highlights the commitment of all stakeholders towards creating an environmentally conscious and responsible event. As preparations for Expo 2023 continue, GORD will be closely working with Expo 2023 organizers and stakeholders to ensure the implementation of the plans laid out to achieve the event’s sustainability strategy.
