Ministry of Public Works, State of Kuwait aims to adopt GSAS & concept of sustainable developments in its public building projects

May 25,2016

In prospect of collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, State of Kuwait, GORD delivered a Global Sustainability Assessment System – Certified Green Professional (GSAS-CGP) Workshop for Kuwait’s construction industry professionals on May 16th over the next 3 consecutive days at the Marina Hotel, Kuwait.

The state of Kuwait is keen to achieve continuous progress as it plans to invest billions of dollars towards the goals of sustainable development projects such as infrastructure, civic buildings and future cities like the Silk City (Madinat Al-Hareer), Sabah Al-Ahmad city and Jaber Al-Ahmad city to name a few.

GORD through its GSAS framework focuses on promoting sustainability best practices from macro to micro levels, tackling main perspective of built environment including energy, water, materials, indoor/outdoor environment, maintenance & operations in the context of the region. It’s noteworthy that the Global Sustainability Assessment System is the first of its kind sustainability rating system in the MENA region. GSAS is characterized by a:

  • Ground-up Approach - Seamless integration between sustainability practices and regional requirements.
  • Best Mix - Combines the best features from the world’s most established sustainability rating systems.
  • Performance-based - A quantifiable and result-oriented rather than feature-oriented approach.
  • Flexible - Individual components are adaptable to any project of any scale without compromising the system integrity.
  • Control - Affords complete control over the development, customization, deployment and future modifications or expansion of the rating system based on any set of specific requirements.

Thirty delegates attended the three-day CGP workshop focused on "how to create sustainable building projects which minimize ecological impact while addressing the specific sustainable needs of the region such as fossil fuels depletion, climate change and air pollution, materials depletion and land contamination, water pollution and water depletion ". Dr. Esam Elsarrag, GORD’s Director – R&D, conducted the workshop and engaged the industry professionals in an interactive session based on various GSAS procedures, tools, applications and assessment requirements.

GORD’s Founding Chairman Dr Yousef Alhorr was also present at the closing of the workshop and appreciating the interest of the participants in GSAS and GORD, he commented, "Being the first integrated and performance-based green building assessment rating system of the Middle East, GSAS is vital to the development of the entire region and we are pleased to see the growing interest and underlying trust of our neighbors in us."

The participants including professionals from government authorities as well as private sector, described it as a very relatable and informative session with great benefits in their professional capacity and thanked GORD for providing them the opportunity.
