Qatar Rail receives the Sustainability Award 2018 for Msheireb Station

Msheireb Station, the main interchange metro station in Doha has received the “Sustainability Award 2018” from Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD). Msheireb Station aims to achieve GSAS Design & Build certification, demonstrating its adherence to GSAS sustainability requirements for a Five Stars Rating.

This recognition for Qatar Rail is a testimony of their high standard of proficiency. From its design that was developed by the architectural department of the company, to the construction of the station as well as the electromechanical systems – Every aspect is being evaluated in detail to meet the criteria set by the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS). The company received this award for best practices in submitting comprehensive data of the station and fulfilling other requirements including attending a series of workshops by GORD.

Dr. Yousef Alhorr (Founding Chairman GORD) handed the award to Eng. Abdulla Abdulaziz Al-Subaie, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Rail, on the second day of Cityscape Qatar 2018. On this occasion, Eng. Abdulla Al-Subaie, said, "Receiving the “Sustainability Award 2018” is an achievement that we are proud of. It is a result of our commitment to strict performance standards. We are pleased that Doha metro stations will serve as a model for sustainable buildings that will raise the name of the State of Qatar at international level in this field. We thank all our partners who are contributing in the project, and GORD for the leading role it is playing in paving the road to sustainability.”

Dr. Yousef praised Qatar Rail’s Metro project, which is one of the pioneering infrastructure projects that will have a significant impact on Qatar's economic development and prosperity for decades. He was pleased to acknowledge that this project is demonstrating sustainability best practices adhering to GSAS standards in Design & Build, Construction as well as for Operations to come.

He added, "It is a remarkable accomplishment for Msheireb Station to win the “Sustainability Award 2018” for aiming GSAS certification with a Five Stars rating. Not just in Qatar but it is indeed a global milestone in sustainable construction since GSAS Railways is the first-of-its-kind assessment scheme in the world, developed specifically for railway projects. "
