GSAS Construction Management workshops continue to empower professionals in implementing green building best practices

Delegates get hands-on training in effective, error-free submission for the certification.

The one-day intensive workshop on GSAS Construction Management organized by GORD Academy drew around ninety senior sustainability professionals working on major projects in Qatar. The training focused on providing the practitioners with hands-on training in sustainable construction methods to minimize the negative impacts associated with construction requirements, processes and on-site practices. The training was designed to empower the practitioners to implement ‘best practice’ by learning about all the necessary tools and means.

The interactive workshop was moderated by GSAS team consisting of Mr. Rubén Muñoz, Mr. Mohammed Al-Humaiqani and Mr. Zaki Ahmed Mohammed. The training was mainly divided into four sections covering Urban Considerations & Site criteria, the Water and Energy criteria, the Materials and Outdoor Environment criteria and the Socio-cultural Dimensions and Management and Operations. It also focused on the application of the various GSAS tools and calculators citing examples from actual projects and guiding the delegates in error-free submission of the required data.

          

GSAS Construction Management certification is intended to assess the environmental impact of the construction process for any type of projects.
GSAS Construction Management framework aims to evaluate the aspects of the construction practices that have sustainability impacts and to perform measurements related to environmental parameters. Currently, many legacy projects in Qatar are aiming the GSAS-CM Certification such as all the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ stadiums and the Qatar Rail’s stations and depots.

Speaking about their confidence in GSAS, Mr. Orjan Lundberg from Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) said, “We’re pleased to have already attained the GSAS CM 4 Stars Certification for Khalifa Stadium which is the first project to be certified in the country and with other projects underway, we look forward to collaboration with GSAS team and all stakeholders today to have maximum efficiency while applying for the certification." 

Also, some of the workshop delegates shared their views regarding the training session:

Ahmad Raza from Ammico said, “We are working on Doha Port redevelopment project and this workshop will definitely help me learn more about sustainability and environment related issues that we face during the construction of a project.”

Anniebeth Sayosa from MIDMAC Contracting Co. WLL added, “We are working on an infrastructural project in Lusail and I found today’s session to be very informative and it will surely facilitate our certification process.”

Hamdi Juma from Petroltecnica Environmental Services commented, “I expected a more theoretical content but to my surprise the workshop offered a more practical approach, guiding the submittal process step by step to attain the certification. This is just what we needed.”

Aparna Mull from KEO International Consultants also said, “Our company is working on the stadium projects and it is very interesting to know from the source about how to implement GSAS CM. It was a good platform not just for the academic input but to hear from practitioners right from the client to sub-contractors their concerns and point of view.”

       

Wilhelm Alheit from Louis Berger added, “The workshop offered very good practical advice as earlier I didn’t have any opportunity to clarify some aspects regarding the calculators. Today we got all these clarifications.”

Kishor Hinduja from Rizzani de Eccher commented, “We are working on the Qatar University and Lusail stations and the underground station at Hamad International Airport for which we are aiming GSAS D&B as well as GSAS CM certifications. I appreciate the way it has been explained in the workshop that how can we achieve a better score by thoroughly understanding and applying the system. I have worked with multiple sustainability systems but GSAS is the only one I know to offer a whole certification that calculates the sustainability aspect during the construction phase and I congratulate GORD for that.”

At the end of the workshop the delegates were briefed about GORD’s initiatives such as the LinkMe online portal for sustainability community and the upcoming  Sustainability Summit 2018.
