GSAS Sports – Energy Assessment Workshop

Jan 26,2016

In furtherance to its commitments towards developing environmentally-friendly stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup™, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) is continuing with the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD) in organizing training workshops that aims to empower professional engineers working within the construction industry to develop sustainable stadiums projects with less energy consumption.

On January 23rd, 2016, SC & GORD conducted the GSAS Sports: Energy Assessment Workshop at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC), in the presence of more than 70 professional engineers from different disciplines representing different sectors of the industry such as consulting firms, contracting companies, master developers, government bodies, building material companies and many others.

The main purpose of this workshop was to provide participants with insights on how to perform energy assessment for Sports development projects, and to increase awareness on the sustainability of the built environment. In addition, the workshop has covered topics on the following:

  • Sports Energy Assessment Framework
  • Energy Considerations for:
  • Open Stadium Facilities
  • Indoor Arenas Facilities
  • Guidelines for Using GSAS Sports Energy Calculator v2.1
  • Case Study for Energy Calculator Implementation

SC & GORD are committed to improve environmental sustainability in Qatar
Both SC & GORD are committed to facilitating the hosting of an environmentally friendly FIFA World Cup™ and making Qatar a leader in the research and development of green technologies. Stadiums delivered by the SC aim to achieve certifications with a 4-STARS rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS). These steps will benefit Qatar and serve as an example for other nations aiming to integrate environmental sustainability into their plans to host sporting and other events.

GSAS Sports Scheme, a new trend of sustainability
GSAS Sports is used to rate sports facilities of all types and sizes during multiple phases including design, construction, operations and legacy use. Sports facilities ratable by GSAS include any buildings or venues that are designed to host a sporting event which support activities for athletes/competitors, support staff, and spectators. Spectators are the intended audience for the sporting event and facility.
